Can you explain the gaps in your resume?

Question Analysis:

Honesty is what matters most in answering this question. If you got laid off or let go, admit it. If you had to deal with a lengthy family or health situation, admit that too. If you simply took some time off to reevaluate your life or to advance your education or qualifications, say so in direct, honest terms. Even if you were incarcerated for a time period, it’s better to admit that than to cover up. The truth will come out eventually anyway.

Gaps in employment can raise concerns in the minds of potential employers about your reliability and commitment, and they need to be clarified. Answer honestly so you’re able to remain calm and collected with your interviewer.

It’s totally valid for the interviewer to ask you about gaps in your resume, so don’t get defensive if this question comes up. Saying something akin to “It’s none of your business” will get you nowhere except a swift ticket to their reject pile.
